This majestic forest park covers a mountain that is situated a few miles from Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second
largest city. Despite its proximity to an urban center, Doi Suthep is is a wonderful place to encounter wildlife.
The Park also houses a royal palace, two Hmong hill tribe villages, and a 600-year-old Buddhist monastery,
Wat Prathat.
A lush evergreen forest can be found on the eastern slope of Doi Suthep, close to Wat Prathat. This distinct
zone, which begins at about 1000 meters and ascends another 400, harbors a great number of lowland bird
species. Above 1,400 meters the vegetation dries up considerably, though there are rich, sporadic clusters
of dense forest in ravines and shaded areas. In these isolated pockets of vegetation can be spotted more of
Doi Suthep’s many birds.
Doi Suthep - Pui National Park is in the area of Amphoe Mae Rim, Amphoe Hang Dong and Amphoe Muang,
covering 262.5 square kilometers. Doi Suthep - Pui National Park is noted for its dense forests and watershed
areas and is blessed with the most beautiful environment housing important places of historical and religious
interest. The park is only 5 kilometers from Chiang Mai and accessible from the Huai Kaeo - Chiang Mai
University Chiang Mai zoo road which goes to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Voraviharn. From there you can walk
upwards for a short while and then turn right toward the office of Doi Suthep National Park.
Doi Suthep-Pui used to be known as Doi Oi Chang. Its new name comes from the name of a hermit,
Prarusiwasuthep who lived at Doi Suthep-Pui was a protected forest. In 1973, The Royal Forest Department
decided that Doi Suthep and 13 other forest areas in the country should eventually be national parks.
The Royal Forest Department sent Mr.Panya Boonsomboon to survey the area.
After that, the national park committed decided that only forest in good condition should be included in
Doi Suthep-Pui National park and areas occupied by villagers should be excluded. In 1981, as the 24th
national park of Thailand which encompasses 161.06 square kilometers. The following year, an additional
100 square kilometers were annexed to the park, bringing the total to 261.06 square kilometers.
Geographical Features
Doi Suthep, Doi Buakha and Doi Pui are the three main peaks in the park. The highest peak, Doi Pui,
rises to 1,685 meters above mean sea levels.

Weather Condition

even in hot season, average temperature is about 20 - 23 degree celsuis. In the cool season, the air is cold
and clear. Temperature can drop as low as 6 degree celsuis in February, August and September are the wettest
months with rain falling daily.

evergreen forest above. The deciduous is further divided into two kinds, deciduous dipterocarp-oak Forest
in the driest areas and mixed evergreen deciduous forest along streams and gullies. Common species are
trees of the families Dipterocarpaceae, Fagaceae and Magnoliaceae.

300 species of birds can be seen here, including red junglefowl, pheasants, eagles, parrots, bulbuls and
